The first week in a new state is all logistics, and Illinois has its own rules. This page is the order of operations: utilities before you arrive, plates and registration in the first 30 days, your driver's license by day 90, and property taxes understood before they arrive. Before you arrive
Set up the utilities
Call or go online before moving day: electric and gas through Ameren Illinois, water through Illinois American Water. Schedule service to start on your closing date, and set up internet (Xfinity, AT&T, or another local provider) a few days early so the first evening is not a dead zone.

Day 1
Unpack the essentials, find the food
Change the locks, read the water meter, and locate the breaker box and water shutoff. Then find the nearest grocery store: the region has everything from national chains to local markets, and every town in the guide has one within five minutes.

Week 1
Handle the plates and the paperwork
Within 30 days of establishing residency, title and register your vehicle with Illinois insurance in place. Use the Secretary of State’s new-resident checklist, bring your out-of-state title and the VSD-190 form, and get it done early in the month when lines are shortest.

Start the 90-day license clock
You have 90 days to transfer your driver’s license at a Driver Services facility. Book an appointment, bring proof of identity, birth date, Social Security number, and two documents proving your new Illinois address if you want a REAL ID.

Week 2
Point everything at the new address
File the USPS change of address, update your bank, credit cards, insurance, voter registration, and any state agencies that held your old address. Forward medical records and find a primary care practice.

Week 3
Meet your property-tax reality
Find your property tax bill or escrow statement and understand how Illinois taxes actually land on your home. If your mortgage escrows, the amount is already in your payment. If not, set aside the money monthly so the bill is never a surprise.
The utilities, in one paragraph
Ameren Illinois delivers both electricity and natural gas across Peoria, billing delivery and supply on a single statement. Illinois American Water provides water service throughout the city. Internet options in the metro include Xfinity and AT&T among others, with fiber available in many suburban areas. Set the three up before closing day, transfer or cancel what you left behind, and the utility column is closed.
Two Illinois-specific notes for newcomers: new residents get 30 days to title and register a vehicle and 90 days to transfer a driver's license. And property taxes here are genuinely high as a percentage of home value, but the home values are low enough that the dollar figure stays workable. World-class care, without leaving town
Peoria is a regional healthcare hub, and there is no need to leave town for world-class care. Two major systems, OSF HealthCare and Carle Health, serve the area, and the newest arrival on the scene is a destination in its own right: the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute on the Saint Francis campus.

The new, state-of-the-art $230 million cancer center on the Saint Francis campus. It draws patients from across the region, and it is one of the biggest reasons families moving here never have to leave town for advanced cancer care.
